NMP-free polyurethane dispersions


Many polyurethane dispersions contain N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), because it is often a required part of the production process, while also facilitating film formation. California Proposition 65 and European legislation require special labeling for products containing NMP. For example in Europe, due to the hazard reclassification of NMP, products containing 5% or more NMP will have to be labeled as being irritant and toxic "T". Bayer MaterialScience has been producing and marketing solvent-free dispersion based on the acetone process for decades already and nowadays all solvent-free dispersions - existing and newly developed - are produced in this process. So for Bayer MaterialScience going without NMP in production has been easy.

The Bayhydrol® product range now includes many solvent-free polyurethane dispersions for most applications polyurethane dispersions are commonly used in. The main reason for still using solvents in the paint formulations is to support film-building properties. In many cases, the total solvent content of an NMP-free formulation, however, is substantially lower compared to conventional formulations.
