Polyaspartics for high-quality very high solid systems
Polyaspartic acids (Polyaspartics) are coating raw material for very low VOC formulations. In addition, they make the coatings process very efficient and exhibit the typical property profile of a polyurethane coating system.
A polyaspartics is an aliphatic polyurea (reaction product of an aliphatic polyisocyanate with a polyaspartic ester), however, coatings based on polyaspartics are very different in both application and coating performance properties from conventional polyureas.
Polyaspartic acids are cured with aliphatic poly-isocyanates (some examples are in the table below). The potlife and reactivity of the formulation can exactly be finetuned by selecting the appropriate
Desmophen® NH component.
Cost efficiency with polyaspartics
Polyaspartics represent a class of binders that combine low VOC properties with high productivity, while at the same time maintaining the quality requirements users expect from polyurethane coatings. Polyaspartic binders can help lower costs in different ways:
Reduced drying times
Coating systems based on polyaspartic acids are dry in just 1 1/2 to 4 hours. So the total time for the coatings process can be reduced significantly
Greater film thickness
Due to the increased film thickness, the number of coating layers in the entire coating build-up can often be reduced.
Polyaspartic coatings – environmentally friendly and robust
Reducing solvent emissions to a minimum has been an ongoing objective in the development of environmentally friendly coating systems. The low viscosity properties of polyaspartic binders - some down to below 100 mPas - make it possible to formulate "very high solid" coatings. Despite their high solids content, these can still be applied easily with the equipment regularly used in corrosion protection and industrial coating areas.
Ensure high quality
In addition to the a.m. properties a polyaspartic coating show the same high quality people have come to expect from polyurethane coatings. The corrosion protection properties are essential for the durability and ultimately for the lifespan of expensive steel structures. The typical requirements (e.g. flexibility, mechanical and chemical resistance) are met by polyaspartics on numerous substrates.
Polyaspartics are not blocked, they are odorless, have a low color value and are compatible with most other resins. Due to their aliphatic character the coatings exhibit good weatherability and excellent corrosion protection.
