Polyurethane adhesives and sealants open the door to new solutions for construction applications

Polyurethane-based adhesives and sealants contribute new solutions for assembly, joining and sealing in the construction industry. Polyurethane adhesives can be formulated to withstand high stresses, they are tough and at the same time they stay elastic, so they follow any "natural" movement of materials with a high coefficient of expansion without damaging the adhesive joint. In addition, they are suitable for a large range of substrates, like wood, concrete, plastic, metal and many more. Bayer MaterialScience offers a broad range of polyurethane raw materials for the formulation of adhesives and sealants, that are representing an alternative for traditional joining methods such as nailing, riveting or clamping.

The product range covers one- or two-component raw materials, solvent-based products and water-based dispersions, polyisocyanates, polyols, silane-terminated polyurethanes, raw materials for hotmelts and sealants, to just name a few.

High-end solutions for flooring adhesives even for strongly expanding wood

Adhesives for parquet floors need to have certain mechanical properties and they also have to be environmentally sound for the application in closed rooms. Solvent-free reactive adhesives based on polyurethane are the raw material of choice, as the do not induce any moisture expansion, they show good adhesion and they can be formulated to be very low in emissions. These are the major advantages of polyurethane technology for this application:
      • Outstanding flexibility
      • Good initial strength
      • Good adhesive strength
      • Good adhesion to wood and concrete
      • No moisture expansion, as no water is introduced into the substrate
      • Low emission for the environmentally friendly application in closed rooms
Bayer MaterialScience offers a large range of raw materials under the brand names Desmodur® E, Desmoseal® M, Desmoseal® S and Desmocap®. There are products suitable for screed priming, raw materials for one- and two-component polyurethane adhesives, binders for the flexibilization of epoxy resins (PUR/EP), silane-terminated polyurethanes for the formulation of low-emission, soft- to hard-elastic parquet adhesives. All binder systems are easy to formulate and they form a tough bond to substrates like concrete, ceramic, stone and others. Even the application over floor-heating systems does not cause any problem.

Polyurethane sealants for elastic joints

For sealants Bayer MaterialScience offers well-known and proven polyurethane raw materials under the trade name Desmoseal®. The product range also covers a number of silane-terminated prepolymers for sealants, that combine the advantages of polyurethane with those of silicones in an ideal way. Read more.

Ply-wood adhesives for engineered wood structures with Desmodur® E prepolymers

One-component adhesives based on Desmodur® E prepolymers are particularly suitable for the production of engineered wood structures. These plied wood layers (several layers of massive wood) play an important role in structural supports and wood frames, as they can carry an 80% higher load compared to the same structure made of massive wood. In addition to their technical and engineering advantages the are free of formaldehydes, too.

Feature: Exterminating the problem of concrete bugholes
One of the galling glitches of hardened concrete structures is the “bughole,” a small hollow caused by a bubble of air trapped against the side of the support form as the concrete hardens, leaving a permanent void in the finished surface. Bayer MaterialScience has developed Desmoseal® S XP 2636 for the filling of bugholes in order to obtain a smooth concrete surface. This greatly facilitates the application of high-quality coatings... more
