Dual Cure systems - Desmolux® with two different curing mechanisms

In three-dimensional systems “shadow areas” have always been a challenge for radiation curing systems. This is were the “Dual Cure” technology offers a solution. The raw materials used are urethane acrylates containing reactive NCO groups, which assure a crosslinking in geometrically unfavorable areas as well. This way it is possible to take advantage of the fast radiation-curing technology for more complicated parts also. An additional advantage is that the “post cure” effect yields better chemical and mechanical properties in the coating film. It also provides good adhesion to substrates on which Mono Cure systems often fail.
Comparison between Mono Cure and Dual Cure systems

Mono-Cure (UV-curing)
Radical polymerization
initiated by UV-light

Dual-Cure
Radical polymerization initiated by UV-light,
Post curing by NCO-OH reaction
  • Very fast, ”instant curing”
instant realization of final properties immediately follwing the radiation process
  • Very high productivity
  • No crosslinking in shadow areas
  • No pot life
  • Very high crosslinking density = low flexibility
  • Adhesion problems possible
  • High mechanical and chemical resistance
  • Dual step curing process:
  • UV-crosslinking results in dry surfaces for immediate processing (efficiency)
  • Final properties by NCO post curing
  • High productivity
  • Crosslinking in shadow areas by NCO reaction
  • Pot life like with regular two component systems
  • High flexibility and improved adhesion
  • High mechanical and chemical resistance
